Between the years 2022 and 2023, Hawken School principal Scott Looney received a 68% raise in salary, equating to more than $400,000 and boosting his salary to over $1 million. According to available data, the average annual raise for private school principals is around 2-3%, though this can vary depending on factors like location, school size, experience level, and individual performance evaluations; with some sources indicating a slightly higher average raise for particularly high-performing principals at prestigious private schools. Scott Looney was also given a loan of $600,000 for housing. It appears from federal filings the loan is being paid off without interest, though that cannot be confirmed. (This loan is in addition to his $1 million salary.benefits).
The Hawken School openly supports Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). On the Hawken School website, the school writes about their DEI efforts, led by the “Director of Fair Play” Darnell Epps. Mr. Epps, who has a degree in music, promotes the need to perform “DEI audits” at organizations and the need for “more diverse representation in leadership.” These actions, if not done fairly, could be considered in direct contrast to the U.S. government’s position on the inherent discrimination of DEI.
How does sitting Board Treasurer Andrew D. Ross support Hawken’s robust DEI position of defiance to the U.S. Government when he personally contributed to a Political Action Committee (PAC) that backed Trump allies and causes? And, his company, Parker Hannifin spent $570,000 in 2024 lobbying for contracts with the U.S. Defense Department?
And how does Treasurer Ross continue to approve $1 million salaries to principal Scott Looney who is also a DEI supporter?
Julia Griffin, Head of The Mastery School at Hawken, received a sizable jump in pay: her earnings went up nearly 30% for an additional $35,000 from 2022 to 2023. In 2023 she earned a total of $196.144 (compensation and other benefits).
From her social media accounts, Julia has posted criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s border policies and has re-posted comments from others who promote theories that the presence of more police in schools leads to police brutality.

“More cops on their (high school) campus means more chances to become a victim of police brutality.”
Julia Griffin is reposting comments from an individual that openly calls U.S. President Donald Trump a facist and racist, and also promote the widely renounced idea of "white privilege."

Janae Peters, Dean of Students at tthe Mastery School of Hawken, posts a lot of images with profanity and references to black power, and messages that are defamatory to the President of the United States. This coming from the Dean of Students, whose job is to oversee all non-academic aspects of student life, including student conduct, wellbeing, activities, support services, and overall student experience. Hawken School must encourage these divisive approaches to life as their Dean of Students proudly promotes and endorses them. See post here from Instagram and more below.
